An Overview of Pet Health Council

Towards the middle of the last century, the understanding of the spread of disease between animals and humans (zoonotic transfer) was still in its infancy. In response to the growing need for information about the prevention of zoonotic diseases, and in continuation of the theme generated through Responsible Pets in Society, the Pet Health Council (PHC) was formed in 1969.

Pet Health Council is made up of 10 dedicated Associate Organisations. Below we have included a brief background on each of them:

Association of Pet Behaviour Councellors

The APBC is an international network of experienced and qualified pet behaviour counsellors, who, on referral from veterinary surgeons, treat behaviour problems in dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses and other pets.

The British Veterinary Association represents the veterinary profession and helps members fulfil their professional roles.

NOAH represents the UK animal medicine industry: its aim is to promote the benefits of safe, effective, quality medicines for the health and welfare of all animals.

People's Dispensory for Sick Animals

In 2008 PDSA celebrates 91 years of caring for the sick and injured animals of people in need. PDSA is the largest private employer of fully qualified veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in Europe.

The Pet Care Trust exists to educate the public in all aspects of responsible pet ownership, both directly, by conducting ad hoc research and promoting the benefits of pet ownership, and indirectly, by promoting high standards of education and training across the pet care business community.
