Foot and mouth
The Pet Health Council is aware of the recent outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey.
The Pet Health Council wishes to emphasise that most pets, including cats and dogs, are not susceptible to Foot and Mouth.
However, as a precaution, dog owners are advised to:
- Obey posted instructions when walking dogs in the countryside such as not using footpaths that may be closed under the restrictions.
- Keep all dogs on leads on agricultural land and therefore, under strict control.
- Observe care when moving from one field or animal holding to another
- Obey all legitimate instructions by stock-keepers and owners of land.
- Take sensible precautions, but do still visit the countryside
The disease is a threat to some animals which may be kept as pets such as cows, sheep, goats and pigs. Any pet owners concerned about the health of their pet should seek veterinary advice.
